Spike protein, PEDV (S protein)

Porcine Epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is a coronavirus responsible for significant morbidity and mortality in pigs. Coronavirus spikes are homotrimeric glycoproteins, which can be divided into  N-terminal S1 region containing receptor binding region and C-terminal S2 region containing membrane fusion mechanism. The S1 region of the coronavirus spike contains domains that contribute to receptor binding. The receptors include host glycans and host proteins, which vary widely between coronaviruses. PEDV has been shown to bind to sialic acid glycans via S1. PEDV spike protein is a key determinant of viral tropism and entry, a key target of host antibody responses, and a good candidate for protein-based vaccine immunogen.
