Pregnancy-associated glycoprotein 1 (PAG1)

Pregnancy-Associated Glycoprotein 1 (PAG1) is one of Pregnancy-Associated Glycoproteins (PAGs), which are products of a gene family expressed by placental trophoblasts of Cetartiodactyla animals. This protein family is a structurally conserved grouping that includes pepsin, renin, and proteinases in many animal, plant and fungal. Interestingly, they are related to the aspartic proteinases but are catalytically inactive. PAG1 is considered as an essential factor during pregnancy and it is labeled as a potential biomarker of pregnancy for ungulates, like sheep and bovine.
