TRIM31 is a member of the tripartite motif (TRIM) family. The TRIM motif includes three zinc-binding domains, a RING, a B-box type 1 and a B-box type 2, and a coiled-coil region. The protein localizes to both the cytoplasm and the nucleus. Its function has not been identified. Northern blot analysis of several tissues detected a 1.2-kb TRIM31 transcript in duodenal mucosa only.The deduced protein contains an N-terminal RING domain, a B-box-2 domain, and a coiled-coil region.
By yeast 2-hybrid analysis, Reymond et al (2001) found that TRIM31 forms homodimers. Mutation analysis of other TRIM proteins suggested that the coiled-coil region mediates complex formation.TRIM31 is a single-copy gene about 170 kb centromeric to HLA-A.
