SIPA1 exhibits a specific GAP activity for Ras-related regulatory proteins Rap1 and Rap2, but not for Ran or other small GTPases. This protein may also hamper mitogen-induced cell cycle progression when abnormally or prematurely expressed. It is localized to the perinuclear region.
By sequencing clones obtained from a size-fractionated adult brain cDNA library, Nagase et al. (2000) cloned SIPA1L2, which they designated KIAA1389. The deduced 1,514-amino acid protein shares significant similarity with SIPA1L1. RT-PCR ELISA detected moderate expression in all adult and fetal tissues and specific adult brain regions examined. The International Radiation Hybrid Mapping Consortium mapped the SIPA1L2 gene to chromosome 1 .
