TACO1 is a mitochondrial translational activator required for efficient translation of cytochrome c oxidase (COX) subunit I (MTCO1) , a component of complex IV of the mitochondrial respiratory complex.TACO1 associated with a molecular complex of about 74 kD.
The deduced 297-amino acid protein has an N-terminal mitochondrial presequence of 26 amino acids. The mature protein has a calculated molecular mass of 29.8 kD. TACO1 is conserved through bacteria, and all TACO1 homologs contain a DUF28 domain. Immunocytochemical analysis localized epitope-tagged TACO1 to mitochondria of transfected HEK293 cells. Alkaline carbonate extraction of isolated mitochondria showed that TACO1 behaved as a mitochondrial matrix
