Na+/H+ Exchanger Domain Containing Protein 2 (NHEDC2)

Sodium hydrogen antiporters, such as NHEDC2, convert the proton motive force established by the respiratory chain or the F1F0 mitochondrial ATPase into sodium gradients that drive other energy-requiring processes, transduce environmental signals into cell responses, or function in drug efflux .

The deduced 537-amino acid human protein contains 12 putative transmembrane domains and a conserved double aspartate motif in transmembrane domain-5. Western blot analysis detected a NHA2 protein of about 50 kD in human erythrocytes and in all mouse tissues examined, with highest expression in pancreas. Immunofluorescence analysis of rat pancreatic beta cells and transfected canine kidney cells localized NHA2 to the plasma membrane.
