PHD Finger Protein 23 (PHF23)
By searching for genes in a region of chromosome 17 involved in a translocation associated with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), followed by 5-prime and 3-prime RACE, Reader et al. (2007) cloned 2 splice variants of PHF23 that differed in their 3-prime noncoding regions. The deduced 403-amino acid protein contains a C-terminal coiled-coiled domain and a plant homeodomain (PHD) finger. The PHD finger is a structural fold found in nuclear proteins that is coordinated by 2 zinc atoms and is predicted to mediate chromatin remodeling.
Using FISH and genomic sequence analysis, Reader et al. (2007) mapped the PHF23 gene to chromosome 17p13.The deduced chimeric protein contains the N-terminal half of NUP98 fused to the C-terminal functional domains of PHF23.
