HAUS8 is 1 of 8 subunits of the 390-kD human augmin complex, or HAUS complex. The augmin complex was first identified in Drosophila, and its name comes from the Latin verb 'augmentare,' meaning 'to increase.' The augmin complex is a microtubule-binding complex involved in microtubule generation within the mitotic spindle and is vital to mitotic spindle assembly.The deduced 410-amino acid protein has 2 central coiled-coil domains. Endogenous and fluorescence-tagged HICE1 distributed to the cytoplasm of U2OS human osteosarcoma cells, with specific enrichment at centrosomes during interphase. At each stage of mitosis, HICE1 distributed to the spindle apparatus, preferentially near the poles. During anaphase and telophase, HICE1 also associated with midzone and midbody.
