The BAZ1A gene encodes the accessory subunit of the ATP-dependent chromatin assembly factor (ACF), a member of the ISWI ('imitation switch') family of chromatin remodeling complexes.
Several domains are conserved among these proteins and are also present in the predicted C. elegans protein encoded by cosmid ZK783.4 and in Drosophila Acf1. All of these proteins contain a C-terminal bromodomain flanked on the N terminus by a PHD finger, a WAKZ motif, an LH motif, and BAZ1 and BAZ2 motifs. A WAC motif is conserved in BAZ1 proteins and Acf1, whereas a ZB2 motif is conserved in BAZ2 proteins and ZK783.4. Northern blot analysis detected expression of a 7.0-kb BAZ1A transcript at highest levels in testis and at low or undetectable levels in other tissues.
