The multisubunit NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (complex I) is the first enzyme complex in the electron transport chain of mitochondria.. To identify genes expressed in hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells, Mao et al. (1998) sequenced cDNAs from umbilical cord blood CD34-positive cell libraries. They identified a cDNA encoding the human homolog of bovine CI-MNLL, a complex I subunit. The predicted protein contains 58 amino acids.
Mammalian complex I has been studied extensively in Bos taurus. The names of some the bovine complex I subunits designate the single-letter code for the 4 N-terminal amino acids (e.g., SGDH). The names of subunits B8-B22 designate their molecular weights.
