CDC Like Kinase 1 (CLK1)
CLK1 encodes a member of the CDC2-like (or LAMMER) family of dual specificity protein kinases. In the nucleus, the encoded protein phosphorylates serine/arginine-rich proteins involved in pre-mRNA processing, releasing them into the nucleoplasm. The choice of splice sites during pre-mRNA processing may be regulated by the concentration of transacting factors, including serine/arginine rich proteins. The deduced 454-amino acid protein consists of a nonconserved 130-residue N-terminal domain containing multiple potential phosphorylation sites, followed by a conserved catalytic domain with predicted serine/threonine specificity. The catalytic domain of the human CLK protein has 32%, 31%, and 29% sequence identity to the catalytic domains of human CDC2, S. pombe cdc2, and S. cerevisiae CDC28, respectively.
