Shroom Family, Member 1 (SHROOM1)
SHROOM1 is the homolog of Xenopus Apx. It has structural similarity with 3 known SHROOM family members, SHROOM2, SHROOM3, and SHROOM4. Similar domains include a PDZ and 2 Apx/Shrm domains (ASD1 and ASD2) and putative EVH1 and PDZ bindings sites. Shroom protein family is a small group of related proteins that are defined by sequence similarity and in most cases by some link to the actin cytoskeleton. Both SHROOM1 and SHROOM3 are expressed in epithelial cells of the cement gland, thus demonstrating that both proteins are associated with cell elongation. Ectopic expression of SHROOM1 elicited apical accumulation of gamma-tubulin in naive epithelial cells, consistent with a role for SHROOM1 in governing microtubule architecture.
