Trans Golgi Network Protein 2 (TGOLN2)
Tgn38, a transmembrane glycoprotein predominantly localized to the trans-Golgi network, has been used to study both the structure and the function of the trans-Golgi network (TGN). The predicted 437-amino acid human protein was designated TGN46 based on its deduced molecular mass of 46 kD. These authors also cloned cDNAs encoding Tgn47, the macaque homolog. Both the human TGN46 and macaque Tgn47 proteins contain a signal peptide, a luminal domain, a membrane-spanning domain, and a cytoplasmic domain. The membrane-spanning region and cytoplasmic tail contain the retention and retrieval signals, respectively, for localization in the TGN. The TGN46 protein is very similar to rat and mouse Tgn38, but diverges from the rodent proteins in the N-terminal portion of the luminal domain.
