Transglutaminase 5 (TGM5)
TGM5 encodes a member of the transglutaminase family. The encoded protein catalyzes formation of protein cross-links between glutamine and lysine residues, often resulting in stabilization of protein assemblies. This reaction is calcium dependent. Mutations in this gene have been associated with acral peeling skin syndrome.
TGM5 contains the conserved structural requirements for transglutaminase activity and calcium binding. Overall, TGM5 shares 40%, 42%, 35%, and 31% protein sequence identity with TGC (TGM2), TGE (TGM3), TGK (TGM1), and TGP (TGM4), respectively. Northern blot analysis revealed that TGM5 is expressed as 2.2- and 2.8-kb mRNAs in foreskin keratinocytes.
