Succinate Receptor 1 (SUCNR1)

SUCNR1 is a G-protein-coupled receptor for succinate, an intermediate molecule of the citric acid cycle. It is involved in the promotion of hematopoietic progenitor cell development, and it has a potential role in renovascular hypertension which has known correlations to renal failure, diabetes and atherosclerosis.GPR91 functions as a receptor for the citric acid cycle intermediate succinate. They demonstrated that succinate increases blood pressure in animals. The succinate-induced hypertensive effect involves the renin-angiotensin system and is abolished in GPR91-deficient mice.The effects of GPR91 are mediated by retinal ganglion neurons, which, in response to increased succinate levels, regulate the production of numerous angiogenic factors including VEGF.
