Serine/Arginine Rich Splicing Factor 6 (SRSF6)
SFRS6 is involved in mRNA splicing and may play a role in site selection in alternative splicing. The encoded nuclear protein belongs to the splicing factor SR family and has been shown to bind with and modulate another member of the family, SFRS12. Screaton et al. (1995) isolated a cDNA representing the human homolog of Drosophila B52/SRp55, which was later identified as SFRS6. Human SRp55 is similar in length to the Drosophila homolog (344 vs 350 or 376 amino acids) and 64% similar to it in amino acid sequence. Screaton et al. (1995) obtained evidence for alternative splicing of the human gene. Recombinant SRp55 protein was able to restore splicing to a cytosolic S100 extract deficient in all SR proteins, showing that SRp55 functions in mRNA formation.
