High Mobility Group Nucleosome Binding Domain Protein 3 (HMGN3)
High mobility group nucleosome-binding domain-containing protein 3 isa member of the HMGN protein family, is thought to reduce the compactness of the chromatin fiber in nucleosomes, thereby enhancing transcription from chromatin templates. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.HMGN3a contains an N-terminal nuclear localization signal (NLS), followed by a nucleotide-binding domain, a second NLS, and a C-terminal chromatin-unfolding and transcriptional activation domain (CHUD). HMGN3a shares 41% and 54% amino acid identity with HMGN1 and HMGN2, respectively, with most differences in the C termini. The 77-amino acid HMGN3b protein is identical to HMGN3a up to gly72, and it lacks most of the C-terminal CHUD domain.
