Carbonic Anhydrase X (CA10)
Carbonic anhydrase-related protein 10 is a protein that belongs to the carbonic anhydrase family of zinc metalloenzymes, which catalyze the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide in various biological processes. The protein encoded by this gene is an acatalytic member of the alpha-carbonic anhydrase subgroup, and it is thought to play a role in the central nervous system, especially in brain development. Multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein have been found for this gene. Hewett-Emmett and Tashian (1996) described an alignment of 6 human brain ESTs that encode part of an alpha-carbonic anhydrase, which they named CA X. They noted that gln92, his94, and his119, which are invariant in all alpha-CA isozymes with catalytic activity, were replaced by glu, arg, and gln, respectively.
