Gamma-interferon-inducible protein Ifi-16 is a member of the HIN-200 (hematopoietic interferon-inducible nuclear antigens with 200 amino acid repeats) family of cytokines. The encoded protein contains domains involved in DNA binding, transcriptional regulation, and protein-protein interactions. The protein localizes to the nucleoplasm and nucleoli, and interacts with p53 and retinoblastoma-1. It modulates p53 function, and inhibits cell growth in the Ras/Raf signaling pathway.At least 6 interferon-gamma-inducible genes located on mouse chromosome 1 were described by Choubey et al., Kingsmore et al., and others. In the mouse, the genes mapped to a 150-kb segment of DNA, and the serum amyloid P component gene (Sap) mapped within approximately 450 kb of the IFN-inducible gene cluster.
