Florfenicol is a semi-synthetic antibacterial agent with a chemical structure and antibacterial activity spectrum similar to thiamphenicol. Florfenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic active against many Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, it works by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Florfenicol is used for the treatment of cattle respiratory disease and foot rot; it is also used in aquaculture. It is a sulfone, secondary alcohol, organic fluorine compound, organic chlorine compound and secondary formamide. It comes from dichloroacetic acid.
