Cyproheptadine is a product of the formal oxidative coupling of the 5 position of 5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene with the 4-position of 1-methylpiperidine, forming a double bond between the two fragments. Cyproheptadine is the first generation of antihistamine, it has antimuscarinic and calcium-channel blocking effects, used to treat allergic rhinitis and urticaria, and as an appetite stimulant. Cyproheptadine is associated with clinically rare and obvious liver injury. Unlike other antihistamines, it is also a serotonin receptor antagonist and is very useful in cases of vascular headache and anorexia. It has the functions of H1 receptor antagonist, serotonin antagonist, antipruritic, antiallergic and gastrointestinal. It is a kind of piperidine and tertiary amine.
