Thiamphenicol is a sulfone and a monocarboxylic acid amide. Thiamphenicol works by binding the 50s ribosomal subunit and inhibits protein synthesis by blocking the aminoacyl tRNA from attaching to the A site. It is an antibacterial substance and a methyl-sulfonyl analogue of chloramphenicol used to treat infectious diseases. It has the role of immunosuppressants and antibacterial agents. Thiamphenicol is effective for a variety of Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria, and selecting of chloramphenicol-resistant transformed cells. It can be used to treat simple gonorrhea infections and chancres.
