Eriodictyol (ED)
Eriodictyol, a flavonoid found in citrus fruits, is among the most potent compounds reported to protect human RPE cells from oxidative stress-induced cell death. ARPE-19 cells that overexpress HO-1 or NQO-1 are more resistant to oxidative stress-induced cell death than control cells.
Eriodictyol is a bitter-masking flavanone, a flavonoid extracted from Yerba Santa (Eriodictyon californicum), a plant native to North America. Eriodictyol is one of the 4 flavanones identified in this plant as having taste-modifying properties, the other three being: homoeriodictyol, its sodium salt and sterubin. Eriodictyol was also found in the twigs of Millettia duchesnei, in Eupatorium arnottianum, lemons and one of its glycoside in rose hips.
