CEMP1 protein has a predicted molecular mass of 25.9 kD and contains several N-glycosylation, phosphorylation, and myristoylation sites. Recombinant human CEMP1 protein crossreacted with antibodies against collagen type X , with which the CEMP1 protein showed some regions of similarity. CEMP1 transcript in human cementoblastoma and periodontal ligament cells but not in alveolar bone or gingival fibroblast cells. The CEMP1 transcript was not detected in any other tissues tested. In situ hybridization revealed a very defined and restricted expression pattern for CEMP1 in periodontal ligament and cementum-forming cells as well as in cells lining blood vessels into the periodontal ligament. Immunolocalization studies demonstrated the presence of CEMP1 in the nucleus and cytoplasm of human cementoblastoma-derived cells and periodontal ligament cells.
