RWPE-1 Prostate Epithelial Cells (RWPE-1)

RWPE-1 cell line is a non-tumorigenic human prostate epithelial cell line that is commonly used in research related to prostate cancer and prostate biology. RWPE-1 cells were derived from the peripheral zone of the adult human prostate gland and exhibit characteristics of normal prostate epithelial cells, making them valuable tools for studying prostate biology, cancer development, and potential therapeutic strategies.

RWPE-1 cell line was established from normal prostate tissue obtained from a 54-year-old Caucasian male donor without evidence of prostate cancer. These cells have a limited lifespan in culture, as they undergo replicative senescence after a certain number of passages, reflecting the finite lifespan of normal human cells.

Researchers use the RWPE-1 cell line as a model system to investigate various aspects of prostate biology, including cell signaling pathways, hormone responses, genetic and epigenetic changes, and interactions between prostate epithelial cells and the tumor microenvironment. By comparing RWPE-1 cells with prostate cancer cell lines, scientists can gain insights into the molecular and cellular alterations that occur during prostate cancer progression.
