C8-D1A Brain Astrocytes (C8-D1A)

C8-D1A cell line is a well-characterized murine astrocyte cell line that was originally derived from primary astrocyte cultures of neonatal mouse cerebellum. These cells were immortalized by infecting them with a retrovirus (pZipSV40 Large T antigen) encoding the SV40 large T antigen, which inactivates the tumor suppressor protein p53 and RB, allowing the cells to proliferate indefinitely.

C8-D1A cells exhibit many characteristics of primary astrocytes, including the expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), a marker protein found in mature astrocytes. They also maintain key astrocytic functions, such as the ability to support neuronal survival, regulate neurotransmitter levels, and maintain the blood-brain barrier.

Due to their astrocytic origin, C8-D1A cells have been widely used as an in vitro model system to study various aspects of astrocyte biology, neuroinflammation, neurodegenerative diseases, and central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Researchers often use these cells to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying astrocyte activation, response to injury, release of inflammatory cytokines, and interactions with neurons and other glial cells.

Moreover, C8-D1A cells have been instrumental in understanding the role of glial cells in neuroinflammation and neuroprotection. Studies using these cells have shed light on the involvement of astrocytes in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis. Researchers have also utilized C8-D1A cells to investigate the therapeutic potential of various compounds, including anti-inflammatory agents, antioxidants, and neurotrophic factors, in treating CNS disorders.
