SK-BR-3

The SK-BR-3 cell line is another well-known and widely used cell line in cancer research, particularly in studies focusing on breast cancer. These cells were initially derived from the pleural effusion of a patient with metastatic breast cancer.

SK-BR-3 cell line is its human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) overexpression. SK-BR-3 cells exhibit high levels of HER2 receptors on their cell surface, making them a valuable model for studying HER2-positive breast cancers. HER2 overexpression is associated with aggressive tumor growth and poor prognosis in breast cancer patients, so the SK-BR-3 cell line is frequently used to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying HER2-driven breast cancer and to develop targeted therapies against HER2. SK-BR-3 cells also lack expression of estrogen and progesterone receptors, classifying them as triple-negative for hormone receptors. This characteristic makes them a useful model for studying triple-negative breast cancer, which tends to be more aggressive and challenging to treat due to its lack of hormone receptors.

SK-BR-3 cell line is a valuable tool for researchers studying HER2-positive and triple-negative breast cancers, as well as for investigating potential targeted therapeutic strategies for these aggressive subtypes of the disease.
