Zinc Finger Protein 2 (ZNF2)
The 'finger' motif, a loop-like domain formed by the interaction of 2 invariant pairs of cysteines and histidines with a zinc atom, has been proposed as a novel protein structure capable of specific interaction with DNA . A subset of these proteins contains a highly conserved amino acid stretch that connects repetitive zinc-binding domains. Using as a probe a mouse DNA segment containing multiple copies of this 7-amino acid domain, Archidiacono et al. (1989) selected several clones from a human liver cDNA library. One of the clones used as a probe, called A1-5, was found to contain 3 'finger' domains, and by study of a panel of human-hamster cell hybrids, Archidiacono et al. (1989) showed that the corresponding gene is located on chromosome 2. By fluorescence in situ hybridization, Rocchi et al. (1999) localized the ZNF2 gene to 2q11.2.
