Solute Carrier Family 26, Member 6 (SLC26A6)
SLC26A6 belongs to the solute carrier 26 family, whose members encode anion transporter proteins. This particular family member encodes a protein involved in transporting chloride, oxalate, sulfate and bicarbonate. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants of this gene, encoding distinct isoforms, have been described, but the full-length nature of some of these variants has not been determined. The deduced 738-amino acid protein has 12 transmembrane domains and intracellular N and C termini. Extracellular loop 2 has 2 potential glycosylation sites. Alternative splicing in exon 17 leads to the presence or absence of a glutamine at position 611. Northern blot analysis detected a major 3.0-kb transcript abundantly expressed in kidney, with lower expression in pancreas, placenta, and skeletal muscle.
