Nucleoporin 35kDa (NUP35)
Nucleoporin NUP53 is a member of the nucleoporin family. The protein is localized to the nuclear rim and is part of the nuclear pore complex (NPC). All molecules entering or leaving the nucleus either diffuse through or are actively transported by the NPC.MP44 has a calculated molecular mass of about 35 kD. It has a small number of scattered phenylalanine-glycine repeats, but not the large domains seen in other nucleoporins.
The central 150 amino acids of MP44 share 21% identity with S. cerevisiae Nup53.Fluorescence-tagged MP44, transfected into HeLa cells, showed punctate nuclear rim localization typical of nucleoporins. Based on this localization and the homology of MP44 to other nucleoporins, Cronshaw et al. (2002) proposed that MP44 be renamed NUP35.
