Inhibin alpha chain is a shared subunit in both Inhibin A and Inhibin B, while the other subunit of Inhibin A is beta A, and the other subunit of Inhibin B is beta B. Inhibin alpha chain are originally found in ovary and testis, but it also widely distributed in many other tissues, like brain, placenta, adrenal cortex and some tumors. The molecular weight of Inhibin alpha chain is about 40kDa, it will be cleaved to mature form with molecular weight of about 15kDa. Inhibins appear to oppose the functions of activins. And they both are involved in regulating diverse functions of vital activity, such as hypothalamic, pituitary hormone secretion, gonadal hormone secretion, insulin secretion, nerve cell survival, germ cell development and maturation and so on.
